The Future of Library Services in Grimsby
In 2024, the Grimsby Public Library Board began developing a plan for the future of library services in Grimsby. The purpose of this project was “to develop a long-term plan for the Grimsby Public Library, covering the development of facilities and services over the next 20 years.” The Grimsby Public Library Board worked with TCI Management Consultants to complete a feasibility study.
Through public consultation, over 450 responses were collected from the community. These responses were combined with a benchmarking review that compared Grimsby Public Library with other similarly sized libraries. The data collected was then analyzed in order to develop a series of options for the future of the library.
Library patrons describe our library as their favourite place in town that welcomes them warmly and has a wide selection of materials. The library is seen as a true community gem that community members visit regularly for comfort, connection and inspiration.
Project Highlights
The following were identified as areas of interest based on responses.
Library as a Community Hub
The move beyond books to a more community-oriented space that is integrated more deeply in everyday life. This may include more inclusive programming, as well as an increase in partnerships to expand the reach of the library.
Programming and Services
A strong desire was identified for more innovative and inclusive programming that expands our current Markerspace and Library of Things collections. Targeted outreach was also identified as an important consideration for the Library.
Governance/Staffing
Looking towards proactive rather than reactive leadership by hiring for new roles that not only support the library’s evolving mission but help to alleviate pressure on current roles.
Community Perception and Engagement
The community felt that more visibility of the library and engagement with the community is necessary in order to ensure the library acts as a true community hub.
Future Facility Needs
There was strong agreement about the need to expand the current facility to accommodate potential population growth. The current site has many opportunities for increased physical expansion.
Future Programming and Functional Space Needs
There was an overwhelming demand for more quiet study and meeting rooms, along with programming space as it is currently a large challenge to find space within the building to work quiet without the interruption of scheduled library programming.
Alternative Service Models
The community expressed an interest in satellite service models including holds lockers, and vending style kiosks with the suggested locations of such services being Grimsby on the Lake, the YMCA, West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Southward Park and the upcoming GO Station. The value of developing alternative service models is so the library can serve more of the community without immediately needing a larger facility.
Next Steps
Short Term (2025 to 2029)
In the short term the Grimsby Public Library Board will look to update the library’s strategic plan and develop a technology plan. Additionally, the board will look to reconfigure existing space while also exploring a 10,000 sq. ft. expansion. Finally, the board will look to reinforce staffing and introduce alternative service models to the Grimsby community for expanded library service.
Medium Term (2031 to 2035)
In the medium term, the Grimsby Public Library Board will focus on enhancing and expanding its offerings. This will be reflected in the broadening of programming and services while strengthening the library staffing team. It will also be the time to explore a construction phase at the current library site while re-evaluating the need for a second branch.
Long Term (2036 to 2045)
Looking even further into the future, the Grimsby Public Library Board will aim to establish a second branch if the need is justified by community demand and continue to evolve programming and services in order to remain responsive to the needs of the community.
